Greece and Russia are conducting new studies of the landscape in Siberia and in the arctic, scientists said on Friday.

These changes, they say, are caused by the melting of large ice sheets and the spreading of high-altitude snowpacks which are increasing the temperature gradient below the Arctic.

It is also caused by a warming climate, which is leading to drought, in which tree and animal species such as the bison have become scarce.

"This is very surprising to us. What is the cause of the change?" said study leader Lior Maisch of the Max Planck Institute for Meteorology in Germany.

"But as we know that there are many such 'latent drivers' and they could be climate variables such as rising sea levels, we want to know what are the main causes. We hope to get data from the next climate study, called the Greenland Ice Sheet Project (GHIP)," said Maisch, who made the findings with the participation of colleagues from Germany, Russia and Europe.
